St. Matthews Catholic Church -Gillette, Wyoming was having a 75th anniversary celebration and though
they had designed logos for printed material, it was too complex and
expensive for the varied usage. The challenge was to revamp their logo
into a single-color logo conveying the theme the Church Council had
chosen. The original logo, recreated here for
demonstration purposes was designed for print and poster. Too many colors
and too expensive was the verdict. After selection of a theme,
simplification was need.
Working on the the theme chosen of St.
Matthews as the Shepherd, this design
evolved with the shepherd's staff and lamb. While a pleasing logo, the
design was too complicated for the varied printing and reproduction needs.
The client liked the staff and asked to keep it in the design.
Getting closer... We dropped the lamb and
tried to incorporate the staff into the lines of the number "7" It
didn't quite work like expected and the fear was the logo would be too
"thin" to stand out on the varied surfaces on which it would be applied.
Final Choice: Bolding up the numbers and
turning the staff's hook to open on the right helped a lot. The visual
interest was piqued by pulling the curve of the "5" and mating it to the
descending stroke of the "7".
The staff effectively hid the small gap remaining between the letters.
One of the final output items was a velvet
draw-string bag with the logo screened on one side. Married with the name
and the years, it made an attractive piece. This logo came together fairly
quickly. From original concept to finished logo was one week. A total of
(4) consults took place between myself and the client including the
conceptual design phase and the final approval.
